The 2011 U.S. Men’s National Team in football broke its eight-day training camp at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., on July 4 and departed for Austria to defend its 2007 gold medal at the IFAF Senior World Championship. The team completed 13 practices in seven days. Good weather permitted 11 of them to be conducted outdoors. Head coach Mel Tjeerdsma (pictured on left) had a spring in his step following the team’s July 4 morning practice.
“We’re ready,” Tjeersdma said. “I’ve been pleased with the maturity of our team. The fact that we have players with football experience beyond college – the NFL, arena football, the UFL and some that have played professionally overseas – that’s helped us.
“Their approach to camp has been beneficial to our younger guys who just finished college. You’d never have two-a-days for five consecutive days in college ball, so having players with experience beyond the NCAA has been a plus. And our coaches have done an excellent job of teaching, installing our offense, defense and special teams.”
Team USA’s game schedule: Fri., July 8 vs. Australia; Sun., July 10 vs. Germany; Tues., July 12 vs. Mexico. Medal round games will be played in Vienna: Fri., July 15 (Bronze) and Sat., July 16 (Gold).
