Canada - USA fight for Gold

Canada and the United States will renew a sporting rivalry that has graced many venues, but never the gridiron in the IFAF Senior World Championship when they meet for the 2011 Gold Medal Today.

Four placement games, including the clashes for the Gold and Bronze medals will be televised by ORF in Austria and streamed live to a worldwide audience at www.IFAF.org.

USA will defend the world crown won in Japan in 2007 at the Ernst Happel Stadium in the Austrian capital city Vienna against a Canada team entering the sport's world championship for the first time at 7pm CET (1pm EDT) on Saturday, July 16. USA won Group A, defeating Australia, Germany and Mexico, while Canada qualified from Group B after seeing off Austria, France and two-time champion Japan.

There is some IFAF history between the North American rivals with USA having beaten Canada at the junior level in the final of the 2009 IFAF Junior World Championship of American football.

But this is new territory.

"We expect to play against the best football nation in the world and our goal is to go in there and win," said Canada head coach Larry Haylor. "I think the USA-Canada matchup is something people were hoping for and we are going to be ready for it."

USA head coach Mel Tjeerdsma said: "Most of these players didn't know each other two weeks ago, so at the first meeting, we said we had one goal - and that is to win the gold medal. Now we are one step way."

Canada running back Matt Stevens said: "We're going to try to be physical, look them in the eye and see who comes out standing at the end." USA quarterback Cody Hawkins added: "We came to win gold. No one wants to finish second. It is America's game, and we take a lot of pride in that. We expect the best from ourselves."

The USA-Canada clash at 7pm is preceded by a fifth place playoff game between France and European rival Germany at 3pm. Twenty-four hours earlier at 3pm on Friday, July 15, Australia and host nation Austria will play for seventh place and then at 7pm Mexico and Japan will contest the Bronze Medal at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna.

Japan moved to within a win of appearing in a fourth consecutive IFAF Senior World Championship Gold Medal game with an efficient 35-10 victory over France.

Japan put seven points on the board on their second possession as a swing pass from Tetsuo Takata to Ken Shimizu took the ball down the left flank to the France 10 yard mark. Then from the five, running back Yasuhiro Maruta powered up the middle just as he had against Austria for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after a successful extra point.

Japan were efficient and ruthless in reply as Nori Kinoshita gained good field position on the kickoff return and Tono quickly fired a 35-yard pass that caught Naoki Maeda in stride and allowed him to dance into the end zone for a 35-10 lead.

The IFAF Senior World Championship is an eight-nation football tournament held every four years since 1999. Games will be played in Graz, Innsbruck and Vienna. The U.S. defeated Japan, 23-20, in double overtime in Tokyo, Japan, to win the 2007 tournament, the first that included Team USA. Prior to the United States’ participation, Japan earned gold medals at the first two IFAF Senior World Championships played in Palermo, Italy (1999), and Frankfurt, Germany (2003).

The U.S. Men’s National Team offensive coordinator is Larry Kehres (pronounced "CARE-us"), head coach of the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. Kehres is 303-23-3 (.926) in 25 seasons with the Purple Raiders, winning 10 NCAA Division III national championships in 14 title game appearances. His teams also have won 19 consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference crowns, 21 in all.

The U.S. defensive coordinator is Lou Tepper, a former head coach at Illinois, Edinboro (Pa.) and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Tepper was the Illini head coach from 1991-96, going 25-31-2 and reaching three bowl games. He is 101-75-2 (.573) overall in 16 seasons a head coach. Tepper has served as the architect of elite defenses in his 17 years as a Division I defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, Colorado and Illinois.

The German Team under the guidance of Offensive Coordinator Brad Arbon and Defensive Coordinator Dogan Özdincer showed major changes within the structure and personnel as just 18 Players from last years team who won the title played in the game. However it did not change the outstanding performance of Team Germany.

Mexico has developed several players who have been members of the NFL International Practice Squad Program and spent the 2008 NFL training camp, preseason and regular season on the practice squads of NFL teams.

American football has been played in Mexico since the early 1920s at different colleges and universities. In 1928 the first professional championship was played and as more universities and colleges joined the championship, four categories - called Fuerzas - were created. The First Fuerza became the National League in 1970, and in 1978 it was reorganized under the present league, ONEFA. Mexico has many leagues with college, junior, and youth leagues under the guidance of the country's national federation Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Americano.

At the World Championship 1999 in Italy and 2003 in Germany, Mexico reached the finals. 1999 the mexican National Team lost against Japan in overtime 6:0. Four years later Japan fetched the Trophy again in the Final against Mexico. At the 4th World Championship of American Football from 8th to 16th of July in Innsbruck, Graz and Vienna, Mexico is once more one of the favorites.

The Australian Senior Outback Head coach John Leijten selected the first 40 players to the senior national team that will compete at the 2011 IFAF Senior World Championship this July in Austria. The camp was held at Runaway Bay training center on the Gold Coast in February. Close to 70 players from six states made their way to the Gold Coast to impress the coaches and make the final 45 man roster that will travel to Austria.

American Football was first played in Australia in 1983. The first season saw all games being played at a disused rubbish tip. There were no goal posts, no medical supervision and no insurance. The early pioneers did not wear helmets but found kick boxing protective headgear useful. Soon after Australia saw the first interstate clash when a team from Melbourne travelled to Sydney. American Football had arrived in Australia.

The 2011 U.S. Men’s National Team in football broke its eight-day training camp at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., on July 4 and departed for Austria to defend its 2007 gold medal at the IFAF Senior World Championship. The team completed 13 practices in seven days. Good weather permitted 11 of them to be conducted outdoors. Head coach Mel Tjeerdsma (pictured on left) had a spring in his step following the team’s July 4 morning practice.

“We’re ready,” Tjeersdma said. “I’ve been pleased with the maturity of our team. The fact that we have players with football experience beyond college – the NFL, arena football, the UFL and some that have played professionally overseas – that’s helped us.

“Their approach to camp has been beneficial to our younger guys who just finished college. You’d never have two-a-days for five consecutive days in college ball, so having players with experience beyond the NCAA has been a plus. And our coaches have done an excellent job of teaching, installing our offense, defense and special teams.”

Team USA’s game schedule: Fri., July 8 vs. Australia; Sun., July 10 vs. Germany; Tues., July 12 vs. Mexico. Medal round games will be played in Vienna: Fri., July 15 (Bronze) and Sat., July 16 (Gold).

The Saskatchewan Roughriders can expect to hear a lot more from quarterback Darian Durant this season.

Durant begins his third full year with the CFL club, coming off a 2010 campaign that saw him lead the league in passing with 5,542 yards. But the 5’11’, 214 lbs. Durant said Jeremy O'Day, the Riders' gregarious starting centre, served as the unit's official spokesman and emotional leader.

Last season, Saskatchewan finished second-worst in points allowed (27.1 per game) and sixth in sacks with 38. Putting consistent pressure on rival quarterbacks remains a priority for Marshall.
