Mexico has developed several players who have been members of the NFL International Practice Squad Program and spent the 2008 NFL training camp, preseason and regular season on the practice squads of NFL teams.
American football has been played in Mexico since the early 1920s at different colleges and universities. In 1928 the first professional championship was played and as more universities and colleges joined the championship, four categories - called Fuerzas - were created. The First Fuerza became the National League in 1970, and in 1978 it was reorganized under the present league, ONEFA. Mexico has many leagues with college, junior, and youth leagues under the guidance of the country's national federation Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Americano.
At the World Championship 1999 in Italy and 2003 in Germany, Mexico reached the finals. 1999 the mexican National Team lost against Japan in overtime 6:0. Four years later Japan fetched the Trophy again in the Final against Mexico. At the 4th World Championship of American Football from 8th to 16th of July in Innsbruck, Graz and Vienna, Mexico is once more one of the favorites.
The Australian Senior Outback Head coach John Leijten selected the first 40 players to the senior national team that will compete at the 2011 IFAF Senior World Championship this July in Austria. The camp was held at Runaway Bay training center on the Gold Coast in February. Close to 70 players from six states made their way to the Gold Coast to impress the coaches and make the final 45 man roster that will travel to Austria.
American Football was first played in Australia in 1983. The first season saw all games being played at a disused rubbish tip. There were no goal posts, no medical supervision and no insurance. The early pioneers did not wear helmets but found kick boxing protective headgear useful. Soon after Australia saw the first interstate clash when a team from Melbourne travelled to Sydney. American Football had arrived in Australia.
