The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed free agent offensive lineman Tony Moll, adding some much-needed depth after injuries to starting right tackle Eben Britton and backup guard Kevin Haslam.
Moll, a fifth-round draft pick by Green Bay in 2006, spent the last two seasons in Baltimore. Moll has played in 60 games, starting 21 of them at guard, tackle and tight end. He worked out for Detroit before signing with Jacksonville.
The Jaguars expect the 6-foot-5, 315-pounder to play in Thursday's preseason opener at New England.
Moll, who played alongside current Jaguars Aaron Kampman and Jason Spitz in Green Bay, will help Jacksonville replace Haslam. He injured his left knee Saturday and was placed on the injured/reserve list Monday. Britton has missed the last few days of training camp with a back injury.
The Patriots raised some eyebrows when they acquired Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco in separate trades on the same day. How will those two veterans assimilate to the "Patriot way"? It will make New England one of the most interesting camps to visit, for sure.The leading outside linebacker in sacks last year was Tully Banta-Cain with five and he was recently released. The penciled-in starters are Jermaine Cunningham and Rob Ninkovich. They had five sacks between them; to put it in perspective, teams like Pittsburgh get 20-plus sacks from their starting outside linebackers. Granted the Pats went 14-2 in 2010, but in their playoff loss to the Jets they didn't get to Sanchez one time in 25 throws.
Ellis, 34, had become the longest-tenured player on the Jets since he was taken 12th overall with a pick that New York obtained as compensation for letting coach Bill Belichick sign with the Patriots.
One of the things to watch closely at Patriots camp is how the three offensive rookies perform. QB Ryan Mallett can really throw the ball, Marcus Cannon should be a road grader at guard and Nate Solder has excellent pass-blocking skills at left tackle. The long-range future for the club might be in the hands of these rookies.
